How to decide on YOUR perfect outfits for your engagement photoshoot!

Whoop whoop!! You are engaged and have your photoshoot all booked in - now to decide on what to wear! Eeek! With so many options, where do you even start? Read through these 5 steps and you should be ready to decide on the perfect outfits!

Step 1. Let your photoshoot location decide your style & colours…

Think aesthetic… vibe… the kind of clothes that convey where you are…. Let’s use a couple of examples.

  • Beach - Think light flowing dresses in floral patterns or simple airy colours such as white, cream, tan, light blues, and even sunset colours. It’s totally appropriate to go barefoot or with sandals.

  • Forest - Try out a dress with some earthy tones such as tans, greens, browns, and creams. You can kick it up a notch with some chunky boots or simple with some strappy sandals.

  • Urban - Opt for something more casual such as jeans & a tee, maybe even choose your fav leather or denim jacket. Or go with something a little more glam and form fitting with a red fitted dress… You can wear your converse, doc’s or even some heels!

Step 2. Dress for the season, and of course… the weather.

This is most definitely not a hard and fast kinda rule… if you want to wear a dress in the rain and take some steamy make out pics! I’m all here for it… but… if you want a bit of a seasonal guide…

  • Spring - Think new life, greens, yellows, pastels, florals, and dresses. It may get a little chilly depending on your location so opt to bring a layer with you.

  • Summer - Sun dresses, brimmed hats and all the bright colours of summer. Bring along a change of clothes if you decide to take a dip at the beach!

  • Autumn - You can totally rock this theme by incorporating autumnal colours into your outfits with shades of red, orange and yellow. :) If it is chilly bring a long a scarf or beanie to keep warm.

  • Winter - For a winter photoshoot, try wearing shades of blue and white to evoke a cozy, winter wonderland vibe. Definitely opt for closed in boots if you can and layer up! You can always change up the layers during your photoshoot.

Step 3. Coordinate… but don’t match!

While it's important for your outfits to coordinate, you don't want to match too closely. Avoid wearing the exact same colors or styles. Instead, try pairing complementary colors and patterns. For example, if one person wears a dress with a floral pattern, the other person could wear a solid color that picks up one of the colors in the pattern.

Step 4. Add some accessories!

The little things can really take it up a notch! Think wide brimmed hats, scarves, bracelets, earrings, things that add interest! And bonus benefit is that it can give your hands something else to interact with during the shoot for photos! I LOVE suggesting to my couples to get one of you to bring along a jacket to pop around the shoulders of your fiancé as the sun sinks over the horizon. Tis a bit cute yeah?

Step 5. Be comfortable and be yourself!

Your engagement photos are an opportunity to show off your personal style as a couple. While it's important to consider the tips above, don't be afraid to let your personalities shine through in your outfits. If you're more laid-back and casual, consider wearing jeans and a sweater. If you're more formal, a dress and suit might be a better fit.

Above all, it's important that you feel comfortable and confident in your outfits. Choose clothing that fits well and makes you feel good about yourself. After all, the most important thing is that you and your fiancé are happy and relaxed in your photos. 🥰

And that my friends should be all you need to keep in mind when choosing your outfit for your engagement shoot! A bonus couple of extras though:

  • Do consider bringing a pair of sneakers in case you want to climb up some rocks, or if there is a bit of a walk!

  • If you’re not sure! Just ask! Most photographers are more than happy for you to send through a pic of the outfits you may be tossing up between.

  • Feel free to bring a couple of options on the day! Engagement sessions are relaxed and fun, there will be plenty of time to change if you want to try out a couple of outfits.

Let me know what you decide to wear?! What’s your style and how have you creatively incorporated that into your engagement shoot?! I would love to know and add to my list!
